Belardo: The Underrated Hero of New Zealand Breeding
SOLD OUT
What more can be said about Belardo? He’s the unsung hero of New Zealand’s breeding ranks and remains severely underrated. Last season, he ranked 7th in the premiership for prize money and 2nd overall in winners. That’s the hallmark of Belardo progeny—they win, and they win a lot.
Belardos thrive on any type of ground. While wet tracks often see trainers scratching their horses, Belardo’s progeny take it all in stride. Whether it’s a Good 4 or a Heavy 10+, they perform and get the job done. This colt is especially exciting as he’s from Belardo’s last-ever yearling crop offered at Karaka, and we secured him at a fantastic price of $42,500 + GST.
PROVEN SUCCESS WITH BELARDO'S PROGENY:
We’ve already had great success with sons of Belardo:
- Carbonados won his debut as a two-year-old, beating stakes-winner Chantilly Lace by 5 lengths. He was subsequently sold for a significant sum.
- Chisora, another Belardo son, was brilliant in his maiden win on New Year’s Eve, and we believe he’s a Wellington Guineas contender this Autumn.
This colt’s damsire, Iffraaj, is proving to be an exceptional broodmare sire, with recent stars like Champion Filly Molly Bloom and Brando hailing from his daughters. Notably, this colt shares the same cross as Carbonados.
Physically, he’s a sizable horse already and is expected to mature well over 16hh and 500kg by the time he’s a three-year-old.
Belardos are renowned as milers, and we anticipate this colt will most likely shine as an Autumn two-year-old. He does hold a Karaka Millions nomination, so if he shows enough zip in his first preparation with Allan Sharrock, he could well target those elite races.
Belardo’s progeny are known for their durability, winning races from two years old well into their later years. We believe this horse has the potential to bring plenty of enjoyment at a modest price. Additionally, his durability and size make him a popular candidate on the trading market, giving you the option of a lucrative trade later in his career.
