WHY HE IS A WORTH A PUNT
My cheapest purchase was a Satono Aladdin colt, secured for $20,000 + GST. He is beautifully bred, but his price was low because he requires minor surgery to remove a bone chip from his left hind fetlock. The procedure would only cost $4,000 and require 6-8 weeks of recovery before beginning his early education.
Dr. Rob Hitchcock assessed him and gave a strong prognosis of recovery. Once the procedure is completed, he will be low risk for racing and trading—if anything, he’ll move better. I was happy to bid on him once I consulted Rob.
I only sought him out a few hours prior to his auction. I compared my notes with my father Marcus, and we both viewed the horse on separate yearling tours. Marcus commented he was “Proper Satono, a good chance with a nice action,” and I put "lovely miler-middle distance type, chance." It was this comparing of notes at the sale ground that led me to pursue him. Allan Sharrock gave him the thumbs up when he saw him walk through the back parade ring.

THE FREAKISH SIRE AND A CHAMPION MOTHER
Satono Aladdin colts are highly sought after, particularly as his best performers have been colts/geldings. His top sons include Tokyo Tycoon, Lupo Solitario, Lantern Way, Sacred Satono, and Grand Impact—all high-class racehorses proving the potency of his male progeny. Remarkably, 70% of his stakes winners are colts or geldings, further reinforcing that his best runners typically emerge from this group.
Shikoba was a Champion 3YO Filly in New Zealand, winning six races, including the Group 2 Eight Carat Classic, Group 2 Royal Stakes, and Group 3 Eulogy Stakes. She also placed in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks, confirming her class over middle distances.
Adding further appeal, this colt is Karaka Millions eligible, giving him a shot at some of New Zealand’s richest juvenile and 3YO races. The recent stake money increases for 2YO and 3YO races in New Zealand mean that horses like him, with a strong pedigree and a bit of patience, have greater earning potential than ever before. The financial incentives are better than they’ve ever been for owners willing to back the right type of horse.

Japanese Deep Impact-line stallions have consistently paired well with champion middle-distance fillies from Australia and New Zealand. Yankee Rose produced Liberty Island, who became a champion filly in Japan, while King’s Rose has produced multiple Group winners when matched with Japanese stallions.
Who knows what this mating might produce? But with a proven pedigree, a strong sire line, and a history of top-class colts, he represents a low-cost punt with significant upside from one of New Zealand’s best stallions.
